Bedale Community Library is going to get some tlc!
We know that we are part of the community, as everyone tells us that. But we want to make sure that everyone feels part of that community. The library is already used by a wide range of younger and older readers, with not quite so many in between. We want to encourage everyone in our community across all age ranges to use it, and especially those who need extra help. Not only for borrowing books, but for anything else that we can offer. We already offer IT help, Story Time, help with form-filling (Household Support Fund, Blue Badge applications, etc), advice when needed, or just a space to sit down and take a breath, and to read a book if it helps.
We would like to give the library (including a small kitchen / store room) a makeover, providing a modernised children's area, a small meeting place/reading corner with sofa, easy chairs and a coffee table, and other improvements to make it into the welcoming space that it should be, and where we can hold more community events. We also want to decorate the library throughout. The library is a Warm Space, a Safe Place, and we welcome members of all communities. We have thirty-five volunteers who give their time to keep the library open, and we value the feedback that we get - that we are all welcoming and helpful.
To make sure that we are doing what everyone wants, we devised a questionnaire which was completed by volunteers and people who use the library. We encouraged the volunteers to talk to everyone about it, and the results were overwhelmingly supportive. We are now going to hold two coffee mornings, on Friday 13th February and Saturday 21st February, both from 10.30 am - 12.00 noon, in the library. The plans are on display there already, and everyone will be extremely welcome to come and have a look at them and to talk to us about the project. Please pop in to see us on one of those dates if you can!
